Soffit Calculator

Replacing or installing soffit starts with knowing exactly how much material to buy. Our free soffit calculator turns your eave measurements into a complete materials list in seconds — enter the linear feet, the overhang depth, and your panel width, and get the soffit square footage, the number of panels you need with 10% waste built in, plus the F-channel and J-channel lengths and an installed cost range.

Soffit is the finished surface under your roof overhang. It protects the rafters, keeps pests out, and — when vented — feeds fresh air into the attic. Whether you are wrapping new eaves or replacing damaged sections, an accurate takeoff prevents the two most expensive mistakes: ordering too little and stalling the job, or ordering far too much and wasting money.

How It Works

  1. Measure the eaves — run a tape along every horizontal roof edge and add the lengths together for total linear feet.
  2. Measure the overhang depth — from the wall to the inside of the fascia board, in inches.
  3. Pick your panel width — most vinyl and aluminum soffit comes 12 inches wide (16-inch panels cover wider overhangs with fewer seams).
  4. Read your materials list — the calculator shows soffit square footage, panels needed with 10% waste, F-channel and J-channel lengths, and an installed cost range.

What Affects Your Soffit Calculation

  • Overhang depth — deeper eaves (24 inches or more) multiply your square footage fast.
  • Panel width — 16-inch panels cover a third more area per panel than 12-inch panels.
  • Vented vs. solid — vented panels cost slightly more but are required for proper attic airflow on most homes.
  • Waste factor — we include 10% for cuts around corners, angles, and mistakes; use 15% for complex rooflines.
  • Channels — F-channel runs along the wall and J-channel along the fascia; both equal your total eave linear feet.

Soffit Calculator FAQs

Multiply total eave linear feet by the overhang depth in feet (inches divided by 12). That gives soffit square footage. Divide by the coverage of one panel — 12 sq ft for a standard 12-inch by 12-foot panel — round up, and add 10% for waste. The calculator above does all of this automatically.
