Heavy snow can turn your roof into a structural risk overnight. Our free snow load calculator tells you exactly how much weight is sitting on your roof right now — enter the roof area, the snow depth, and the snow type (fresh, packed, or wet), and get the load in pounds per square foot (psf), the total weight in pounds, plus a plain-English safety assessment telling you when to monitor, when to remove snow, and when to call a professional.
Not all snow weighs the same. A foot of fresh powder might add just 6 psf, while a foot of wet spring snow can exceed 25 psf — enough to stress roofs built to minimum code. This calculator uses standard snow density values so you get a realistic estimate without needing an engineering degree.

How It Works
- Measure the roof area — Use the footprint of the roof (length × width) in square feet. For a quick estimate, use your home’s square footage.
- Measure snow depth — Push a ruler or yardstick through the snow to the roof surface in several spots and average the readings.
- Pick the snow type — Fresh powder is light and fluffy; packed snow has settled; wet snow is heavy and slushy (most dangerous).
- Read your results — The calculator shows load in psf (pounds per square foot), total weight in pounds, and a color-coded safety note.
What Affects Your Snow Load
- Snow density: The biggest variable. Wet snow can weigh 4× more than fresh powder at the same depth.
- Depth: Load increases linearly — double the depth, double the weight.
- Roof slope: Steep roofs shed snow; flat or low-slope roofs accumulate the full depth.
- Drifting: Wind piles snow against parapets, valleys, and roof obstructions, creating local overloads.
- Ice: Ice weighs ~57 lbs per cubic foot — far heavier than snow. Ice dams add hidden load the calculator doesn’t include.
Snow Density Reference
| Snow Type | Density (pcf) | 12″ Load (psf) |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh powder | ~6 | ~6 |
| Packed snow | ~15 | ~15 |
| Wet snow | ~25 | ~25 |
| Ice | ~57 | ~57 |

Snow Load Calculator FAQs
Multiply roof area × snow depth (in feet) × snow density. In psf: (depth in inches ÷ 12) × density in pcf. Example: 12 inches of packed snow (15 pcf) = (12÷12) × 15 = 15 psf. Multiply by roof area for total pounds.
